Courts Set to Reopen as Abia Government, JUSUN Near Agreement

The Abia State Government has announced that courts across the state will soon resume operations following significant progress in negotiations with the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Abia State Branch.

This development was disclosed during a press conference addressed by the Director General of the Abia State Strategic Communications Bureau, Onyebuchi Ememanka, alongside the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.
According to Ememanka, the state government has maintained consistent and constructive engagements with JUSUN leadership since the commencement of the industrial action. He noted that discussions have reached an advanced stage, with only minor issues left to be resolved before a final agreement is reached.

“As a responsible and responsive government, we have sustained regular dialogue with the union, and we are almost at the point of full resolution. There are just a few loose ends to tighten,” he said.

He commended the leadership of JUSUN for demonstrating a strong commitment to resolving the dispute, describing their approach as constructive and encouraging.
The government also reassured stakeholders in the justice sector, particularly the Nigerian Bar Association, of its unwavering commitment to judicial independence. Ememanka emphasized that the administration of Governor Alex Otti has no intention of interfering with or undermining the autonomy of the judiciary.

“The administration remains fully committed to strengthening the judiciary and ensuring it operates independently. We are equally dedicated to improving the welfare of all workers in the state, including judiciary staff,” he added.

Ememanka further highlighted the role of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna, noting that he is actively involved in the resolution process and aligned with the governor’s vision for a functional and efficient judicial system.
The prolonged strike by JUSUN had disrupted court activities across Abia State, affecting legal proceedings and access to justice.

However, with the latest developments, normal judicial operations are expected to resume in the coming days once a final agreement is concluded.
