Bala Mohammed Dumps PDP for APM
Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi State, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor announced his defection on Saturday at the Government House in Bauchi, following a closed-door meeting with key political stakeholders. He was accompanied by loyalists within the PDP, particularly those aligned with a faction of the party.
At the event, Mohammed appeared alongside the National Chairman of the APM, signaling a formal alignment with the party after months of speculation over his political future.
Until his defection, Mohammed served as Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, making his exit a major blow to the opposition party, which has been grappling with internal divisions and leadership disputes in recent months.
The move comes after a period of intense political uncertainty, during which the governor was linked with possible defections to other parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, his eventual decision to join the APM appears to signal a new alignment strategy ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Political analysts say the development could reshape opposition politics, particularly in northern Nigeria, as stakeholders begin early permutations for the 2027 elections.
