Peter Obi Resigns from ADC, Decries “Toxic” Political Environment
Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal crises and what he described as a worsening toxic political environment in Nigeria.
Obi disclosed his decision in a statement on Sunday, where he expressed deep concern over the state of the nation’s politics, describing it as increasingly hostile, divisive, and discouraging to sincere leadership.
According to him, the system that should provide protection and opportunities for citizens has instead become characterized by intimidation, insecurity, and persistent scrutiny. He noted that individuals striving to serve with integrity often face undue pressure, criticism, and misrepresentation.
The former Anambra State governor stated that his exit from the ADC was not due to personal grievances with party leaders. He clarified that the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, as well as former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, treated him with respect, adding that he continues to hold them in high regard.
However, Obi expressed concern that the same challenges that affected his time in the Labour Party—including internal disputes, legal battles, and external interference—are beginning to manifest within the ADC. He warned that such issues distract from addressing critical national problems and undermine efforts at nation-building.
He further lamented what he described as a societal shift where humility is perceived as weakness, and integrity is often misinterpreted. Obi maintained that his approach to leadership has always been rooted in service, sacrifice, and uplifting others, rather than the pursuit of power or personal gain.
Reaffirming his commitment to national development, Obi stressed that his political aspiration is driven by a desire to see a Nigeria where citizens are secure, economically stable, and treated with dignity. He highlighted concerns over insecurity, poverty, and displacement, calling for leadership anchored on compassion, justice, and equal opportunity.
Obi’s resignation comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections and is expected to significantly impact opposition dynamics in the country.
He concluded by reiterating his belief that Nigeria can still achieve responsible leadership and inclusive governance, maintaining his long-standing message that a better nation remains possible.
