Supreme Court Voids Ibadan PDP Convention, Dismisses Turaki-Led Leadership Appeal
The Supreme Court of Nigeria on Thursday nullified the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party held in Ibadan in November 2025, dealing a decisive blow to the faction led by Tanimu Turaki.
In a unanimous judgment, the apex court dismissed the appeal filed by the Turaki-led faction, describing it as lacking merit and affirming earlier rulings of lower courts which had declared the convention unlawful.
The court held that the Ibadan convention was conducted in violation of a valid and subsisting court order, rendering the entire exercise null and void. It further ruled that all decisions and leadership outcomes arising from the convention cannot stand in the eyes of the law.
The disputed convention, held between November 15 and 16, 2025, had produced a parallel leadership within the PDP, deepening internal divisions and triggering a protracted legal battle over the party’s leadership structure.
In its reasoning, the Supreme Court faulted the appellants for engaging in what it described as an abuse of court process, noting that due legal procedures were not properly followed in challenging earlier decisions.
With this ruling, the Turaki-led leadership loses any legal recognition, effectively restoring the position established by prior court judgments. The decision is final and puts an end to months of litigation surrounding the PDP’s internal crisis
