GOMEP Selects Delta SUBEB Chairman, Mariere, for National Icon Award

Abuja – The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has selected the Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Barr. Samuel Oghenevwogaga Mariere, for its prestigious National Icon Award for Outstanding Contributions to Basic Education Development.

The honour, according to the Guild, follows an extensive and independent assessment of Mariere’s professional accomplishments, leadership credentials and contributions to educational development, public service and governance.

Announcing the decision in Abuja, the National President of GOMEP-NG, Comr. Akpovoke Otiti, disclosed that the selection was the outcome of a painstaking review conducted by the Association’s Award and Planning Committee.

Otiti stated that the committee, chaired by Madam Rabi Abubakar, Esq., alongside six other members, subjected nominees to a rigorous screening and fact checking process before unanimously endorsing Mariere for the national honour.

According to him, the committee found the SUBEB Chairman worthy of recognition for his visionary leadership in driving reforms in Delta State’s basic education sector and his commitment to implementing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, as well as supporting the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the education sector.

The National President noted that Mariere’s outstanding record in public service, legislative excellence, educational administration and human capital development distinguished him among several nominees considered from across the country.

The decision was formally announced by the GOMEP-NG Publicity Secretary, Mr. Eluwa Tochukwu, who said the award reflects the Guild’s commitment to identifying and celebrating public officials whose leadership has made measurable impacts on national development.

He explained that the National Icon Award for Outstanding Contributions to Basic Education Development is reserved for exceptional leaders whose vision, integrity and dedication have significantly advanced educational growth and strengthened public institutions.

The award presentation will form part of activities marking the GOMEP-NG Maiden Annual National Conference, Lecture and Workshop, scheduled for Thursday, 26 November 2026, at Fabino by Top Rank Hotels, Area 11, Garki, Abuja.

GOMEP-NG said the conference will assemble leading policymakers, media executives, editors, publishers, communication experts and stakeholders from across Nigeria to discuss the future of digital journalism, media professionalism and national development while honouring distinguished Nigerians whose contributions continue to inspire excellence in public service.
