Akaliro Raises Alarm Over Herdsmen Invasion in Umuahia North, Abia Assembly Steps In

The Abia State House of Assembly has taken decisive steps to address the rising cases of herdsmen invasion and crop destruction in Umuahia North Local Government Area, following a petition raised by the member representing the constituency, Hon. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro.

Presenting the matter as one of urgent public importance, Hon. Akaliro decried the activities of suspected herdsmen in the Umuagu Autonomous Community, describing the situation as an “invasion” despite the existence of the state’s anti-grazing law enacted in 2018.

He warned that the continued destruction of farmlands and disruption of local livelihoods could escalate into a deeper crisis if not urgently addressed.

The lawmaker therefore called on the House to intervene swiftly to prevent further deterioration of security and economic stability in the affected communities.

In response, the House committed the petition to its Joint Committee on Security and Agriculture for thorough legislative review and necessary action aimed at curbing the menace.

The move signals the Assembly’s intention to strengthen enforcement mechanisms and explore sustainable solutions to the recurring clashes between herders and farming communities in the area.
