2027 Polls: Elder Comrade Chikwendu Joins Abia South Senatorial Race on Labour Party Platform
Elder Comrade James Chibuzo Chikwendu (Onye Nkem) has formally joined the race to represent Abia South Senatorial District under the platform of the Labour Party, positioning himself as a grassroots-driven contender ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Chikwendu, an Aba-born administrator, real estate professional, and human rights advocate, brings into the contest a blend of activism, professional experience, and longstanding political participation.
A native of Ntigha Umuomei in Obingwa Local Government Area, he has remained actively involved in community mobilization and rights advocacy across Abia State.
His entry into the senatorial race on the platform of the Labour Party comes amid shifting political alignments within the state, where the party continues to expand its influence following recent electoral performances.
Observers note that Chikwendu’s identity as a “Nwa Aba” and his deep-rooted engagement with grassroots structures may shape his appeal among voters in Aba and surrounding communities.
A seasoned professional, Chikwendu has built a career spanning real estate, construction, and project management, serving as Principal Partner at Nwokorie and Company Estate Surveyors and Valuers, as well as Managing Director of Jim Konsult Ltd. He is also a member of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers.
Beyond his professional pursuits, he is widely recognized for his contributions to civil society and human rights advocacy. He is the Founder of the James Chikwendu Human Rights Foundation and also serves as Founder and National Coordinator of the Network for Advancement of Human Rights and Social Justice.
In addition, he holds the position of National Vice President of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), where he has remained a vocal advocate for justice, equity, and social reform.
In the political arena, Chikwendu was a foundation member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and contested for the Abia State House of Assembly seat for Obingwa West (Uhie) Constituency in the 2015 general elections.
His political experience also includes active participation in internal party processes within the Labour Party, where he took part in the just concluded ward, local government, and state congresses, as well as the party’s National Convention of the party. He also contested for the position of Deputy Chairman during the Labour Party State Congress.
The Senatorial hopeful is also the current president of Eziama High School, Aba Class of 88 Old Boys Association.
Analysts say these experiences have strengthened his understanding of electoral dynamics and grassroots political engagement in Abia State.
Party sources indicate that his senatorial ambition will prioritize youth empowerment, constituency development, and accountable representation—key themes that have consistently featured in his public engagements.
While the contest for Abia South Senatorial District is expected to attract multiple aspirants across party lines, Chikwendu’s entry under the Labour Party adds a new dimension to what is shaping up to be a competitive race.
