Senator Oluremi Tinubu Donates ₦2 Billion to Boost Akwete Fabric Industry
The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, has announced a ₦2 billion donation to the Akwete Cooperative Society in Abia State as part of efforts to preserve, promote, and expand the globally acclaimed Akwete fabric industry.
Speaking during her visit to the historic Akwete community, Senator Tinubu underscored the cultural and economic significance of the centuries-old weaving tradition. She called on the Igbo people to safeguard the heritage by passing the craft from one generation to another while embracing innovation that would position Akwete fabric for greater national and international recognition without compromising its rich cultural identity. She described Akwete weaving as a treasured cultural asset that deserves deliberate protection and sustained investment.
In his remarks, Governor Alex Otti reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to revitalising the Akwete textile industry, describing the indigenous fabric as unrivalled in quality and craftsmanship. He stated that since assuming office in 2023, his government has prioritised the promotion of Akwete through policies aimed at integrating modern technology, eliminating obstacles to production, and creating an enabling environment for the industry to thrive. The governor added that these efforts align with his administration’s broader vision of inclusive economic development across the state.
Earlier, the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, welcomed the First Lady and applauded her for the Renewed Hope Initiative’s interventions targeted at empowering women, youths, and vulnerable groups across the country. She described the visit as a landmark moment for Abia State, noting that Senator Tinubu’s support would not only preserve the cherished Akwete weaving tradition but also strengthen the livelihoods of the women who have sustained the craft over generations.
