Nkechi Nwaogu Dumps APC, Joins NDC Ahead of 2027

Former Abia Central Senator, Nkechi Justina Nwaogu, popularly known in Abia political circles as “Mama APC,” has officially dumped the APC and joined the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 elections.

The former senator confirmed her resignation from the APC on Thursday, citing alleged irregularities and internal controversies surrounding the party’s recently concluded senatorial primaries in Abia State.

According to reports, Nwaogu participated in the NDC senatorial primaries for Abia Central alongside other aspirants, including Emeka Nwankpa.

Speaking on her decision to leave the APC, the former lawmaker alleged that there was no credible primary election in her zone and accused some party stakeholders of undermining the structure they had built over the years.

Her defection reportedly followed the APC primary outcome in which her rival, Hon. Emeka Atuma, emerged victorious. Political observers believe the move could reshape the political equation in Abia Central ahead of the 2027 National Assembly elections.

Meanwhile, the APC in Abia State said it had not yet received any formal resignation letter from the former senator. The party’s publicity secretary, Uche Aguoru, stated that the party was still officially unaware of her exit.

Nwaogu previously served as a member of the House of Representatives before representing Abia Central in the Senate for two terms. She also served as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Calabar.
