ABSIIDP Conducts Open Competitive Bidding For Major Projects in Ohuhu Umuahia
Succour is about to get to major communities in Ohuhu, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, as the Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development Project (ABSIIDP) has conducted an Open Competitive Bidding exercise for major road and erosion-control projects expected to impact communities across the area.
The bidding exercise, held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at the ABSIIDP Head Office in Umuahia, was part of the procurement process for projects under Lots 2 to 10, funded through the African Development Bank-supported infrastructure development programme. Over 100 construction firms submitted bids for the various projects.
Of particular significance to Ohuhu are the projects captured under Lot 4, Lot 7 and Lot 8, which collectively target critical road infrastructure and erosion challenges affecting communities within Umuahia and its environs.
Under Lot 4, the ABSIIDP is proposing the construction of the Amaogwugwu–Umuagu–Afor Umuezike Road, a road expected to improve connectivity between communities and ease the movement of people, agricultural produce and goods within the area.
Lot 7 covers two major road projects: the Umuezike–Afor Umuda–Uzo Isingwu–Empire Carpet Industries Road and the Afor Umuda–Ulonna North Road. The projects are expected to open up communities, improve accessibility and strengthen economic activities by providing better road links to residential, commercial and industrial areas.
Also attracting significant attention is Lot 8, which provides for the construction of the Ishi-Okata Gully Erosion Control and Protection Project. The intervention is expected to address the growing threat posed by gully erosion and protect communities, roads and other public infrastructure from further environmental degradation.
Speaking during the bidding exercise, the Abia State Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Otti, represented by the Director of Works in the Ministry, Engr. Udo-Bid Iweha, said the state government was committed to ensuring that infrastructure projects were awarded to the most qualified contractors.
He explained that the open competitive bidding process was designed to provide a transparent and competitive platform through which contractors would be assessed, with emphasis on competence and capacity to deliver projects according to specification.
The ABSIIDP Project Coordinator, Engr. Dr. Ndudim Ononiwu, also reiterated the commitment of the project to delivering durable and high-quality infrastructure that would serve beneficiary communities and the state at large.
Ononiwu noted that the competitive process would enable ABSIIDP to select the best contractor for each project, stressing the importance of ensuring that the projects, once completed, meet the required standards and provide lasting value to the people.
The Procurement Unit of ABSIIDP, led by Pst. Iheanyi Nnodimele Paragon, conducted the bidding process for Lots 2 to 10 transparently and in line with international procurement best practices.
With the conclusion of the open competitive bidding, the projects will now proceed to the evaluation stage, where the bids submitted by participating firms will be assessed before successful contractors are selected for the respective lots.
For residents and communities in Ohuhu, particularly those along the Amaogwugwu–Umuagu–Afor Umuezike, Umuezike–Afor Umuda–Uzo Isingwu–Empire Carpet Industries and Afor Umuda–Ulonna North corridors, as well as areas affected by erosion at Ishi-Okata, the development signals a significant step towards addressing long-standing infrastructure and environmental challenges.
