Senate Urges FG to Suspend Terrorist Rehabilitation Programme
The Nigerian Senate has urged the Federal Government to suspend the rehabilitation and reintegration programme for repentant Boko Haram members, calling for a tougher approach to tackling terrorism and other violent crimes across the country.
The resolution was adopted during plenary following a motion sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua on the escalating attacks, abductions, and killings of serving and retired military personnel. Lawmakers expressed concern that the country’s worsening security situation requires stronger measures against terrorists rather than policies that reintegrate former insurgents into society.
The Senate also called on security agencies to intensify efforts to arrest and prosecute terrorists and other criminal elements responsible for violent attacks nationwide. It further directed its committees on security to strengthen oversight of security agencies to ensure greater accountability in addressing the country’s security challenges.
As part of its resolutions, the upper legislative chamber resolved that a delegation led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio should meet with Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss the deteriorating security situation and recommend urgent measures to restore peace across the country.
The Senate maintained that while Nigeria must continue efforts to combat insurgency, individuals involved in terrorism should face the full weight of the law, while greater attention should be given to supporting victims of violent attacks and strengthening national security.
