PROFILE OF DR. BEN UGOCHUKWU IWUAGWU

Dr. Ben Ugochukwu Iwuagwu is a seasoned Nigerian architect, academic, and researcher with extensive experience in architectural education, sustainable housing, and urban development. Born in the late 1970s in Umudiawa, Ohuhu, Umuahia North of Abia State, he has built a distinguished career that seamlessly blends academia, professional practice, and public sector consultancy.

Currently serving as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Architecture at Abia State University, Uturu, Dr. Iwuagwu has made significant contributions to architectural training and research in Nigeria.

His academic journey reflects a solid foundation in architecture, having earned a Ph.D. in Architecture from Imo State University, Owerri (2017), alongside both Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Architecture from Abia State University.

His doctoral research focused on improving housing conditions in urban slums—an area that remains central to his scholarly and professional engagements.

Dr. Iwuagwu’s career spans over a decade in higher education and professional practice. He previously lectured at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, and held multiple academic and administrative roles at Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, including serving as Head of the Department of Architecture from 2014 to 2018.

His teaching portfolio covers a wide range of courses such as advanced architectural design, environmental planning, building construction, and research methods, reflecting his depth and versatility in architectural education.
Beyond academia, he is an accomplished consultant and practicing architect.

He serves as the Director of Landmark Projects Nigeria and has worked as a civil works consultant on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) projects in Abia State.

His professional footprint includes the design and supervision of major public infrastructure such as primary health centres, classroom blocks, residential buildings, and institutional facilities across all 17 local government areas of Abia State.

A respected scholar, Dr. Iwuagwu has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in reputable local and international journals.

His research interests focus on urban slum upgrading, affordable housing, sustainable architecture, and alternative building materials. His work continues to contribute meaningfully to policy discussions and academic discourse on housing affordability and environmental sustainability in Nigeria and beyond.

He is actively involved in professional and institutional service, holding membership in the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON), and the Association of Architectural Educators in Nigeria.

He has also served on several academic boards, accreditation panels, and editorial committees of scholarly journals, further reinforcing his influence in both academia and professional practice.

Dr. Iwuagwu’s contributions have earned him recognition, including teaching awards and honours at international conferences. His exposure through academic engagements across Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa underscores his standing as a scholar of global repute.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, he is a Knight of the Anglican Communion and a recognized Chief in his community, reflecting his commitment to service, leadership, and cultural values. He is married and blessed with children.
