Uruguay Appoint Diego Forlán as Interim Head Coach After World Cup Exit
Uruguay have officially appointed legendary former striker Diego Forlán as interim head coach of the national team following the departure of Marcelo Bielsa after the country’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) confirmed that the 47-year-old will lead La Celeste until March 2027 while also continuing in charge of Uruguay’s Under-20 team. His long-term future with the senior national team is expected to be reviewed after that period.
Forlán is regarded as one of Uruguay’s greatest footballers, having earned 112 international caps, scored 36 goals, won the 2011 Copa América and claimed the Golden Ball as the best player at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
His appointment comes after Bielsa stepped down following Uruguay’s group-stage elimination from the World Cup, with the federation hoping the former Manchester United, Villarreal and Atlético Madrid star can restore confidence and guide the team into a new era.
