Fubara Withdraws From Rivers APC Governorship Primaries, Cites Peace And Unity
Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially withdrawn from the forthcoming governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, saying the decision was taken in the interest of peace, stability, and unity in the state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Fubara said his decision followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family members, friends, and political associates.
The Rivers governor described the move as “difficult but necessary,” while pledging his full support for whoever eventually emerges as the flag bearer of the APC in the state.
According to him, leadership requires sacrifice and personal ambition must sometimes give way to the collective interest of the people.
“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he stated.
Fubara also addressed his supporters, many of whom had backed his anticipated participation in the APC governorship race. He acknowledged the disappointment and frustration his withdrawal may generate among loyalists who invested time, resources, and hope into his political ambition.
The governor said his silence in recent weeks had been deliberate and strategic, insisting that his actions were guided by the higher interest of Rivers State.
Using a traditional proverb, Fubara hinted at underlying political pressures surrounding the process, though he refrained from disclosing details.
“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose,” he said.
The governor further disclosed that he had faced “immense pressures and difficult choices,” but maintained that his love for Rivers State outweighed personal political considerations.
Fubara thanked the APC leadership for providing him a platform throughout the process and also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as support and encouragement.
He urged party members and supporters to remain united and committed to the APC, describing the party as “our collective home.”
The governor emphasized that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as an act of weakness or surrender, but rather as a conscious sacrifice aimed at preserving peace and unity in Rivers State.
“Let it be clearly understood that I stepped aside not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” he stated.
Fubara added that he remains committed to serving the people of Rivers State until the end of his tenure.
